A Community of Researchers and Policymakers

Founded in 2026, the METIS Hub unites policymakers and researchers from history, archaeology, and paleoenvironmental sciences to integrate AI-driven research into public policy.

Where History Informs the Future

We advance hybrid human-AI intelligence to deploy Big Historical Data and Complex Systems theory into actionable policy insight.

The METIS Hub drives rigorous research at the confluence of paleodisciplines, computational modeling, and governance. We believe the dynamics shaping our future, from state resilience to anthropogenic change, cannot be understood in isolation. By bringing data scientists together with historians, and complex systems theorists with policymakers, we build research frameworks that are technically cutting-edge and grounded in deep historical context.

From forecasting political fragility and tracking long-term inequality to unearthing the deep roots of environmental change, our researchers ensure that advanced AI amplifies human foresight to guide sound decision-making.

Big Historical Data Leveraging Big Historical Data through global initiatives like Pandora and IsoMemo.
Accessible Policy Insights Developing purpose-built software and AI tools to translate complex analytical findings into intuitive, actionable intelligence for decision-makers and the public.
Hybrid Human-AI Collaboration Embedding human-in-the-loop AI across the entire research lifecycle, from data creation to model interpretation and public outreach.
Open Science & Modelling Championing transparent, reproducible research and building open-source computational tools for modeling complex systems, available via the Pandora & IsoMemo software platform.

Research Areas

Six core research domains guide our investigations, each combining technical rigor with humanistic inquiry.

🧠

Cognitive AI

Studying how AI systems can model and interact with human cognitive processes β€” from attention and memory to reasoning and creativity. We develop computational models that explain, not just predict.

Neural Networks Cognitive Models Memory Systems

AI Ethics & Society

Examining the ethical, social, and political implications of AI systems. Our work develops frameworks for responsible AI deployment, algorithmic fairness, and meaningful human oversight.

Fairness Accountability Governance
🀝

Human-AI Collaboration

Designing and studying systems where humans and AI work together. We investigate how to build trust, share agency, and create interfaces that amplify human expertise rather than replace it.

Language & Meaning

Exploring how AI systems understand and generate language, and what this reveals about human communication. We focus on semantic grounding, conversational understanding, and the limits of statistical language.

AI in Education

Developing AI-powered learning environments that adapt to individual students while respecting pedagogical principles. We study how intelligent tutors can support deep learning and metacognition.
